Comfort and Space: Ideal for Long Drives?
One of the highlights of the MG Windsor EV is its impressive backseat space. With plenty of legroom and knee room, the Windsor can comfortably seat rear passengers, even on long journeys. The rear seats offer a 135° recline, allowing passengers to relax and stretch out, akin to a business-class experience.
That said, there are some drawbacks. While the seats are comfortable for short trips, longer drives may cause discomfort due to the padding that can dig into your back. Additionally, rear amenities are somewhat limited—only a single Type-C USB port and no rear sunblinds, which could make hot days uncomfortable for passengers.
Performance: Smooth and Relaxed Driving
The Windsor EV is powered by a 38 kWh battery pack, delivering 136 horsepower. While not the most powerful EV on the market, its performance is linear and relaxed—ideal for city driving and highway cruising. Unlike many EVs, it doesn’t have the abrupt, neck-snapping acceleration, which makes it a calm and comfortable ride.
In terms of driving modes, the Windsor EV offers Eco, Normal, and Sport settings, but even in Sport mode, it’s more about smooth acceleration rather than aggressive performance. The car also features three levels of regenerative braking, though even the most aggressive setting offers a gentle experience, making the Windsor easy to drive for EV newcomers.
Range and Charging: What to Expect
MG claims the Windsor EV can achieve 331 km on a full charge. In our real-world testing, we managed an estimated range of around 254 km, mixing highway and city driving. This range is competitive for an urban EV, though a larger battery option (like the 50.7 kWh available abroad) would have been a welcome addition for those seeking more range.
Charging times are reasonable, with a full charge on a 7.4 kW charger taking 6.5 hours, while a 45 kW fast charger can charge the battery to 80% in just 55 minutes.
MG Windsor EV: Flexible Options
One of the most talked-about aspects of the MG Windsor is its flexible buying and ownership schemes. MG offers a “battery as a service” option, where buyers can finance the battery separately, reducing the upfront cost of the car. You can pay for the vehicle outright and then lease the battery for 3.5 rupees per kilometer driven.
Additionally, MG is offering a lifetime battery warranty for the first owner, one year of free charging through MG’s e-hub, and a 360 buyback plan guaranteeing 60% of the vehicle’s price after three years.
Conclusion: A Well-Rounded EV
The MG Windsor EV is more than just a stylish EV. It blends practicality, comfort, and cutting-edge technology with innovative ownership options. While there are some drawbacks, like limited rear amenities and the complex touchscreen interface, the Windsor delivers a smooth and pleasant driving experience. With its spacious interior and competitive range, it’s well-suited for both urban commutes and longer drives.
Overall, the MG Windsor EV is one of the most well-rounded EVs from MG yet and is sure to make a significant impact on the Indian market.
