In the recent Global NCAP safety rating of crash testing results, car buyers in India received a blend of good and not-so-good news. Today, we’ll delve into the performance of three well-known models: The Honda Amaze, Kia Carens, and Mahindra Bolero Neo.
Honda Amaze: Safety Needs a Major Upgrade
The Honda Amaze, a popular compact sedan, received a concerning two-star overall safety rating from Global NCAP. This rating raises serious concerns, especially considering child occupant protection received a worrying zero stars. While the adult occupant compartment held up somewhat better with a two-star rating (27.85 points out of 34), there are significant weaknesses.
Knee protection for both driver and passenger was rated as marginal, highlighting a potential for serious leg injuries in a collision. Although head and neck protection for adult occupants fared better, the Amaze falls short of expectations in critical safety areas.

Kia Carens: Redemption Through Improvement
The Kia Carens, previously tested in June 2022 with a disappointing three-star rating, underwent a retest under updated protocols. This time, the results were more encouraging. Kia demonstrably improved the Carens’ safety by addressing concerns raised in the initial test. The first test highlighted a high risk of neck injuries, prompting Kia to upgrade the restraint systems. This proactive approach resulted in a commendable three-star rating in the retest.
Based on the final test results, the Kia Carens achieved a score of 22.07 out of 34 points for adult occupation protection and 41 out of 49 points for child occupation protection. Consequently, it received a three-star rating for adult protection and a five-star rating for child protection.

Mahindra Bolero Neo: A Step Back for Safety
Mahindra, known for its recent five-star safety performers like the XUV700 and Scorpio N, took a step back with the Bolero Neo. This SUV managed a meager one-star overall rating in the Global NCAP tests. This is particularly concerning considering it comes equipped with essential safety features like dual airbags, seatbelt reminders, and pre-tensioners. The adult occupant compartment scored a low 20.26 points out of 34, while child occupant protection fared slightly better at 12.71 points out of 49.
